The Complement of The Journey to The West is one of the sequels of Journey to The West written by Dong Yue in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.The novel’s unique dream narrative mode makes its narrative art very prominent.Based on the text and combined with the traditional narratology theory,this paper will make a systematic and detailed study of the narrative art of the novel from the aspects of the narrator,narrative perspective,narrative structure and narrative time and space,among which narrative time and space is the focus of this paper.This paper is mainly divided into three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The introduction part mainly introduces the research status and significance of The Complement of The Journey to The West.After classifying and summarizing the research results of previous scholars on the narrative of The Complement of The Journey to The West,the research methods and research value of this paper are clarified.The main body of the paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the author and the background of the book.This chapter first introduces the author’s dream-loving complex and the relationship with the creation of the novel,then explains the background of the time when the novel was written,and briefly explains the version of the novel that was circulated.The second chapter is the narrator and narrative perspective of The Complement of The Journey to The West.This chapter mainly focuses on two types of narrators,storytellers and story characters,and a character-based narrative perspective.The storytellers intervene in the narrative by explaining the development of the story directly,commenting and explaining the content of the story and narrating the psychological activities of the characters.The story characters mainly participate in the narration through two ways of self-narration and other narration.The novel mainly constructs the story content from the perspective of the walker,and lays out the whole story.In the perspective of the walker,the perspective of other characters is interspersed to supplement the narrative and link the plot.The third chapter is the narrative structure of The Complement of The Journey to The West.This chapter mainly grasps the plot structure of the surface layer and the deep thematic structure of the novel.In the surface structure of the novel,the full text is combined with a linear structure of "into a dream-a dream-out of a dream" and a nested structure of the space-time transformation of the virtual and real.In the deep structure,the author’s thoughts and values are conveyed through the conversion of "emotion" and "Tao" and the internal logic of criticizing reality.The fourth chapter is the narrative time of The Complement of The Journey to The West.The narrative time of the novel is divided into real time and dream time.Based on the text,this chapter analyzes the characteristics of humanization and materialization of the real time of the novel and the order and disorder of the dream time.At the same time,it discusses the promotion of the plot content by the pre-narrative and flashback of the novel,and the adjustment of the narrative rhythm by the scene,summary and pause.The fifth chapter is the narrative space of The Complement of The Journey to The West.This chapter first explains the morphological characteristics of the fixed real space and the horizontal and the horizontal and vertical deformation of the dream space in The Complement of The Journey to The West.Secondly,it explains the three spatial transformation forms of dream,mirror and door in the novel and their internal implications.Finally,it focuses on analyzing the important role of the novel’s multiple spaces on the character image,story plot and narrative theme.The conclusion part summarizes the narrative art of The Complement of The Journey to The West and emphasizes the significance of this paper.
