| Characters in The Crying of Lot 49 are used to suppressing their inner feelings in silence,which makes them fall into abnormal mental state gradually.At the same time,silence deprives characters of their communication ability and makes them in an isolated situation,which seems to make them the victims of silence.Through the analysis of the characters’ minds,this thesis discovers that characters have not been entirely victims of silence,but the opponents at the turning point of breaking silence.Based on the text world theory,this thesis studies characters’ minds in silence,and explores whether characters are entirely victims of silence through the analysis of words and deeds,emotions and psychological activities of characters such as,Oedipa,Mucho,Driblette,Metzger,Dr Hilarius,the old sailor and members of IA.The first chapter studies how characters’ minds in silence make the character bound by their spiritual shackle of abnormal state,resulting in communication breakdown and isolation.The spiritual shackles of abnormal state of the whole characters are showed through repressed and unsatisfied boulomaic modal worlds.The conflict between the characters’ boulomaic modal worlds and epistemic modal worlds indicates their communication dilemma and isolated situation.Characters’ hidden emotional appeals are also analyzed through the cross-border of multi-layered world.The complement between modal worlds and text worlds comprehensively shows characters’ inner world and mind style.The second chapter studies from one of the perspectives of mind analysis,motives of the characters,to explore the influence of character mind on whether they can achieve motivation.To release the repressed selves is their way to fight against silence.By analyzing the intersection,complement and collision between the characters’ boulomaic modal worlds and epistemic modal-worlds,this chapter reveals characters’ respective motives and finds that their motives are to release repressed selves;From perspective of negations,the accessibility of modal worlds,and the awakening or abandonment of deontic modal-worlds,this thesis explores different ways and possibilities for the characters to release their repressed selves.Characters’ efforts to release themselves and fight in silence also demonstrated from the perspective of world switches.The third chapter starts from the connection between characters and the Tristero,the private postal system,to analyze the construction of connection under characters’ minds and the influence on characters’ minds due to connection.Characters are no longer isolated individuals,but become related groups.Therefore,characters have the hope of delivering as one and breaking the silence.Starting from the unity and divergence of boulomaic modal-worlds and deontic modal-worlds,this chapter explores whether the connection between the character and the Tristero can continue;By analyzing the logical connection of multiple worlds and the world switch mechanism of multiple worlds,this thesis discusses the changes of characters’ minds after witnessing the miracle of the Tristero.Characters’ motives to release the repressed selves are their struggles between the character and silence;Tristero system brings the enlightenment of communication and connection,improves the characters’ isolated situation and brings the hope of delivering as one;Although neither all the characters have released their repressed selves,nor all them have been associated with the Tristero all the time,they bring enlightenment to break the silence,and their efforts to break the silence are also admirable.Achieving her motive and witnessing the connection created by the Tristero,heroine Oedip’s inherent metaphor is impacted and her cognitive schema is improved.Therefore her evasive,isolated and depressive mind style is changed which functions as mental preparation for breaking silence.Therefore,characters are not entirely victims of silence,but protesters on the turn point of crying out. |
