The worship of Zhong Kui has been developed nearly a thousand years, such theme could be seen in painting, literature and opera. It became popular especially after spreading from the mainland to Taiwan, and can also be seen in Japan and Southeast Asia influenced by Chinese culture.Traditionally painters referenced Zhong Kui’s legend to express themselves both ideally and lyrically, which increased the variety of his image. However, identifying the sequels to the derivative work of"Zhong Kui Giving His Sister Away in Marriage" needs further exploration. The main purpose of this research is to try to explain the reasons, from sociology and folklore perspective,of the presence of "Zhong Kui’s sister visiting her parental home with her children after being given away in marriage" as a topic in temple murals in Taiwan.Image analysis and field research were conducted to makeup the inadequacy of literature references. The influences of Chinese traditional culture disrupted during the Japanese colonial period has on art development were also discussed.I hope the outcome of this research would answer the question of the emergence of derivative narration of Zhong Kui’s legend in Taiwan as a theme, and create new aspects in the art history.
