The phenomenon of self-repair in speech output has always been concerned.This phenomenon exists not only in the use of the mother language but also in the use of the second language.The interpreter corrects errors,inappropriate information,and different information during the process of interpreting through self-repair.How does the use of self-repair affect the quality of interpreting?This paper aims to answer three research questions: 1.what are major forms of self-repair used by interpreting beginners in the process of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting? 2.what are the motivations triggering interpreting beginners to use self-repair? 3.how interpreting beginners’ use of self-repair effects interpreting quality?To answer the questions above,the author recorded the student’s ChineseEnglish Consecutive Interpreting Test with the consent of the students.The subjects of the experiment are 37 undergraduate students who majored in English.After the exam,all the audios were saved and analyzed.After analyzing the students’ self-repair in consecutive interpreting,this paper has the following findings:1.The interpreting beginners use self-repair many times during the interpreting process.Students’ use of different self-repair are different.Students use error repair most frequently.And they are more sensitive to grammatical errors in their output.2.The reasons which trigger students to use self-repair are low self-monitoring awareness,unbalanced effort allocation,insufficient bilingual ability,insufficient accumulation of expression,not enough preparation before interpreting.3.There is a high relevance between self-repair and the quality of interpreting,the relevance varies when it comes to different kinds of self-repair.Among them,the error repair takes the highest relevance with the quality of interpreting.Meanwhile,interpreting beginners’ use of self-repair reasonably during the interpreting process could improve the quality of interpreting. |
