Virginia Woolf’s The Waves is a highly experimental modernist work that is poetic, abstract, and formalized.Because of its novel art form and beautiful poetic feature,it has aroused heated discussion in academia. At present, domestic and international scholars have begun to pay attention to the community thought in Woolf’s works, but they rarely explain the community in The Waves. This thesis uses the community theory of Ferdinand T?nnies and Zygmunt Bauman and combines the approaches from new criticism and ecocriticism to observe the community writing in The Waves from the perspective of life.Based on the relationship between the individual and the whole,it aims to sort out and analyze the interpretation of life community in this work and Woolf’s thinking and exploration of the overall view of human destiny. This thesis includes three parts. The first part mainly introduces Virginia Woolf and her novel The Waves, the international and domestic studies about the novel, and the relevant community theories, critical approaches,as well as the significance and framework of the thesis. The second part includes three chapters.Chapter One mainly discusses how Woolf created an organic whole by using the correspondence between the different parts of the novel and the unity of form and content.Chapter Two focuses on individuals’ experience of life in The Waves based on the content and aims to explore how Woolf built a community by mastering human commonness and tolerating individual differences, and pursuing the inclusive harmony between man and nature.Chapter Three mainly analyses Percival and Bernard, two representative characters in The Waves. They take friendship as the carrier and emotion as the bond to form a spiritual community and express Woolf’s beautiful vision of the common destiny of human beings. The last part is the conclusion. It reiterates the argument of this thesis, makes a compendious summary about all that has been illustrated above.
