Harold Pinter(1930-2008),winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 2005,is probably the most influential modern English playwrights, whose works are characterized by highly individual style noted as “Pinteresque”.The Dwarfs is considered as an autobiography of Pinter’s childhood and his youth life in Hackney. Its main theme is about the so-called friendship happened among three middle-aged men.Since drama is an art form that its recreational and social function can be better realized through stage performance, therefore, the translator, guided by the Skopos Theory, adopts some specific translation strategies and techniques to realize the adequate translation of The Dwarfs through highlighting performability, achieving understandability and ensuring correspondence. This translation practice report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the translation report, the author and the play as well as the structure of the report. The second chapter introduces preparations for the translation. The third chapter is an introduction to the Skopos Theory and explains its feasibility in guiding the translation of Pinter’s drama. The fourth chapter is the part of case study, showing some typical examples of combining the Skopos Theory with the translation practice of The Dwarfs. The fifth chapter is a summary, which mainly describes the author’s enlightments and the limitations.By writing this report, the author tries to explore general rules of translating Pinter’s plays, attempts to offer a Chinese version of The Dwarfs suitable for stage performance and to provide some references for scholars who are interested in the study of Pinter’s drama translation from the perspective of stage performance.
