| Under the background of globalization,the cultural exchange between countries becomes more and more frequent.Culture,as a soft power of a country,becomes more and more the core of international competition.However,at present,many English learners in China are unable to introduce Chinese culture to foreigners properly and fluently,which is very detrimental to the spread of Chinese culture.College English teaching guide,Guidelines for the ideological and political construction of college courses and Measures for the management of teaching materials in ordinary colleges and universities issued by the Ministry of Education clearly point out that the integration and teaching of Chinese culture should be taken seriously in English teaching.As the carrier of the curriculum and an important part of English education,the Chinese cultural contents in the textbooks play an important role in helping college students improve their intercultural communicative competence and promoting the spread of Chinese culture.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the Chinese cultural content in college English textbooks.This study takes the student books 1-4 of New Horizon College English(3rd edition)reading and writing course,and the users of the textbook as the research objects,and focuses on “What types of Chinese cultural content have been presented in New Horizon College English(3rd edition)reading and writing course?How does New Horizon College English(3rd edition)reading and writing course present Chinese culture? How do users of the textbook evaluate the Chinese cultural content of this textbook?”.This paper reviews the current research situation of culture teaching,English textbook evaluation and English textbook culture classification in foreign language teaching,and then chooses Cheng Xiaotang’s textbook evaluation theory as the research framework.In the internal evaluation aspect,This study uses Byram’s textbook cultural classification criteria to explore the types of Chinese cultural content and the proportion among the types,and analyzes the presentation of Chinese cultural contents in this set of textbooks so as to find out the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese cultural contents arrangement in this set of textbooks.In terms of external evaluation,the study choose the investigation method to investigate the users’ evaluation and need of the Chinese cultural contents of this textbook with questionnaire and interview.The findings are as follows:1.The presentation of the types of Chinese cultural contents.The nine categories of cultural types proposed by Byram are all covered in the textbook,but there is a certain degree of uneven distribution among the types,and the content of these types is not comprehensive.2.The aspect of the presentation of Chinese culture.From the presentation of Chinese cultural content in the each section of the textbooks,the content of Chinese culture in this textbook is distributed in every section of the textbook,and attention has been paid to the integration of Chinese culture.But there is a certain problem of uneven distribution of Chinese culture.From the way of presentation,the textbook presents Chinese culture in a variety of flexible formats,with more emphasis on illustrations and text,but mainly in an implicit presentation format.3.Evaluation of the textbook users.The users of the textbooks have realized the importance of Chinese culture input in English learning,and believed that adding Chinese culture into the textbooks is helpful to improve their ability of expressing Chinese culture in English.Generally speaking,the users of the textbooks are satisfied with the presentation of the Chinese cultural contents,but most of them expect to get rich and varied Chinese cultural contents.In the application of Chinese cultural content in the textbook,the Chinese cultural content of the textbook can basically meet the teaching needs of teachers.However,due to the arrangement of class hours and the difficulty of obtaining teaching resources,Chinese culture can not always be taught in college English teaching.According to the analysis conclusion,this research has put forward the related suggestion.First of all,textbook writers should pay attention to the important position of Chinese culture in college English textbooks and the allocation of Chinese culture in the textbooks.Secondly,college English teachers should establish correct English teaching concepts,improve their own Chinese cultural accomplishment,and pay attention to digging and supplementing the Chinese cultural content in textbooks.Finally,college students should establish a correct concept of English learning,a correct view of the relationship between Chinese and Western cultures,and they should actively learn the English expression of Chinese culture and try to use them in practice. |
