Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba was written in 1283 and is a Tibetan historical book written in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty. The previous research in the academic circle mainly focused on the translation of Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba and the exploration of the historical value of the recorded content. There is a lack of systematic research on this work, and some of the results have room for further in-depth and supplementary.Nelpa Pa??ita, the author of Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba,combined with the records of many later history books, shows that his real name is Gragspa Smonlam Blogros, also known as Gragspa Smonlam Tshulkhrims.Born in Lhungrub County in the northeast of Lhasa in the middle of the 13 th century,he was an eminent monk of the Kadam sect.Later historians called him Nelpa Pa??ita. The thirteenth-generation disciple of Klumes Tshulkhrims Shesrab, who also has the inheritance of the upper Vinaya,is a great Vinaya Holder who penetrates the upper and lower Vinayas. He wrote Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba at the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty. The Tibetan region has been included in the territory of the Central Plains dynasty, and the Tibetan region has been reunified since the collapse of the Tubo dynasty. The political unity naturally promoted the development of economy and culture.Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba is ready in such a social background. The book mainly records the history from the Gnya’ Khri Tsampo who is the first king of Tubo to the beginning of late stage of Tibetan Buddhism. The records and viewpoints of some historical events are completely different from other historical records, and they are of great reference for current historical research. The genre and style of Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba is unique. Its genre is a mixture of lo rgyus, rgyal rabs, chos ’byung, rnam thar and other genres. The style is a hybrid style between the mid-stage hybrid style and the late-stage complex style.A kind of mixed style connecting the past and the next. This unique genre and style feature was formed by the overall development of Tibetan historiography at that time.Since the publication of Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba,several versions in different scripts and formats have been published. The original editions of the current editions are the manuscripts collected in the private library of the Sikkim scholar Barmiok Athing Tashi Dadul Densapa. The German and Chinese translations and domestic typographical versions can all be traced back to this edition, including the manuscript in 1974,which was published earlier than this edition, should also be its second copy. There are some mistakes, omissions and doubts in the existing typographical and Chinese translations of Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba,which have affected the use of this document by the majority of scholars.Using the method of document comparison to supplement the typographical version based on the centralized comparison of its various versions, and supplement the Chinese translation.Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba also has its unique historical value and characteristics. The content, genre, and style of Nelpa’s History Metog phreng ba have obvious inheritance relations with the early works such as Sba Bzhed and Emperor Lineage of Tibet. It also had a certain influence on the later works such as The Blue Annals,The Red Annals,The Tibetan Royal Chronicle and Nyang Chos ’byung. It has important reference value for our current study of Tibetan history and Tibetan Buddhism history. Some of these records are sufficient to solve the current controversial issues related to Tibetan history in academic circles. As an eminent monk with extensive knowledge,Nelpa Pa??ita has a straightforward writing, plain language, concise and concise language, which reflects a high level of history. The account of some historical events in the article shows that he has both Buddhist and secular historical views, and the balance between the two is just right.Promoting the primacy of Buddhism did not deliberately turn all history into Buddhism. As a monk of Kadampa who inherited the so-called orthodox Buddhism,he inevitably showed his inherent sect distinction in the process of describing the history of the “Ancient Translation school”.
