| Children are the future and hope of a country,and enough attention must be paid to their education both at home and abroad.Learning advanced parenting concepts from abroad can play a very positive role in promoting the development of children’s education in our country,so the translator chose texts related to children’s education as the translation materials.The source text is taken from chapter 2 and 3 of How to Raise Successful People written by Esther Wojcicki,who is known as “the most successful mother in America”,which focuses on the author’s experience of raising children with“trust” and “respect” and shares some suggestions for parenting reference.This report is based on the cohesion theory created by Halliday and Hasan,in which the means of cohesion are divided into two categories: grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.The former includes reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction,and the latter consists of reiteration and collocation.The translator analyzed the differences between English and Chinese cohesive devices and summarized their impact on the translation from many examples: English highlights hypotaxis while Chinese emphasizes parataxis;pronouns are more common in English than in Chinese,so it is necessary to be more explicit about referents and avoid ambiguity during translating;omission often occurs in English,and in order to maintain the integrity of the content,the meaning can be expressed in Chinese through the reiteration of original words and other lexical devices.The use of conjunctions in English is more frequent than in Chinese,which is dominant.While in Chinese,conjunctive components are often invisible,so it is necessary to handle the translation process flexibly in accordance with the context to achieve a complete and coherent translation.When translating,the translator took the inner cohesion between words,sentences and discourse into account to make the target text both practical and readable.Through the translation practice,the translator has gained a deeper understanding of the differences and similarities of the cohesive means between English and Chinese.It is hoped that this project will provide some references for translators who plan to study the translation of similar texts,and make a modest contribution to the study of parenting translation under the guidance of cohesion theory. |
