An Applied Research On Senior High School Students’ English Autonomous Learning Ability Based On The New Curriculum Standard

With the deepening of college entrance examination system and curriculum reform in China,lots of scholars have paid more extensive attention to autonomous learning.The General High School English Curriculum Standard indicates that the construction of a student-centered classroom model is necessary.And the autonomous learning ability of students must be strengthened.This thesis systematically interpreted the scientific connotation of autonomous learning and the significance of advocating autonomous learning under the background of the New Curriculum Standard.Based on carrying out a more in-depth research on how to cultivate and improve students’ autonomous learning ability in senior high school,this thesis aimed to introduce the teaching mode of autonomous learning into the senior high school English teaching.This thesis chose the students of two classes in Senior One of the Zhengzhou Foreign Language School as the research subjects.The English levels of two classes were close to each other.The questionnaire survey and interview were applied to understand and analyze the current situation and existing problems of students’ autonomous learning in these two classes from five aspects.According to the results of the survey,this thesis set one class as the control class in which the traditional teaching model was implemented.The other class was set as an experimental class in which a student-based teaching model of autonomous learning was implemented.Based on the transition from “guided autonomous learning” to “autonomous learning”in the classroom operation mode of autonomous learning,the thesis found that teachers and students had different roles at different stages in the class that was implemented the autonomous learning teaching model.And then students’ autonomy in learning could be gradually cultivated and enhanced.On this basis,it was explored whether there was a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the improvement of English learning achievement and the development of students’ autonomous learning ability.Finally,it provided suggestions and references for the construction of the teaching mode of English autonomous learning for senior high school students.The results of questionnaire survey and interview showed that the research subjects had unclear long-term learning goals and that the ability to apply learning strategies was very poor;they lacked the awareness and the ability of self-monitoring;they had difficulties in using extracurricular resources effectively;they lacked the ability to evaluate the results of autonomous learning.After a semester of classroom experimental research,based on the questionnaire survey,interview and performance test,this thesis found that the ability of autonomous learning of the research subjects had been greatly improved after a period of training and monitoring,and it was positively correlated with the improvement of English performance significantly.As a consequence,this thesis suggested that the teaching concept should be changed in English teaching,and the consciousness and ability of students’ autonomous learning should be cultivated.Moreover,the motivation of students’ learning should be stimulated,and the monitoring of students’ learning should be strengthened.Furthermore,the evaluation system should be reformed,and the favorable environment for promoting students’ autonomous learning should be created.
