Multimodal discourse refers to the discourse combination that communicates through various perceptual channels such as auditory sense, visual sense and tactile sense and uses various symbol systems and resources such as language, images, sounds, colors and actions. Each modality has its own meaning potential.Nowadays,as a single modality, the language can no longer meet the requirements of high-speed information circulation. Therefore, teachers in college English classes are no longer satisfied with single modality teaching. They also communicate and transmit information through non-language modalities such as gaze, gestures and facial expressions.Based on Systemic Functional Linguistic by Halliday,Visual Grammar by Kress and Van Leeuven,as well as Zhang Delu’s Synthetic Framework for Multimodal Discourse Analysis, this thesis mainly researches three questions:1.What are the overall characteristics of language modalities and non-language modalities in listening and speaking class by college English teachers?2.What are the characteristics of language modalities and non-language modalities in different teaching stages?3.In what way is the collaboration between language modalities and non-language modalities in listening and speaking class by college English teachers to realize the meaning transfer? The research will adopt both quantitative and qualitative methods, with the qualitative method being dominant. For the former,ELAN,a multimedia annotation tool, will be used. For the latter, classroom observation and stimulated recall will be used. The research analyzes the modality types and modality cooperative features of listening and speaking classes of four English teachers in a normal university,so as to explore the characteristics and enlightening significance of multimodal teaching of excellent teachers. The results show that the modality types chosen by the four teachers are basically the same, they all pay attention to the use of the para-language and non-language modalities. The para-language modalities used mainly include rising tone and falling tone, and the non-language modalities mainly include gaze, gestures, and facial expressions. And in different teaching stages, the complexity of the modality is different, which is related to the teaching focus. The research can provide some references for college English teachers how to use multimodal resources. |
