The Relationship And Mechanism Of Social Value Orientation And Trustworthiness

For a long time,trust research has focused on the positive significance of trust,especially on the influencing factors of trust.However,trust does not always lead to positive and beneficial results.In today’s world of trust betrayals,the positive significance of trust can only be reflected by trusting trustworthy people.What kind of people are more trustworthy?Are people who are considerate of others always trustworthy?Previous studies have explored the relationship between personality traits and trustworthiness,but mainly from the perspective of trustee,without considering the influence of trustworthiness dimensions.This study aims to investigate the influencing factors of trustworthiness from the perspective of the trustee and from the perspective of personality,and explore the relationship between social value orientation and trustworthiness as well as its internal mechanism through four studies,specifically:Study 1(n=310)investigates the relationship between social value orientation and benevolence-based and integrity-based trustworthiness,as well as the mediating role of moral sensitivity.On this basis,Study 2(n=350)changes the trustworthiness questionnaire and takes into account the role components of moral sensitivity.The relationship between social value orientation and different dimensions of trustworthiness is examined again,and the mediating effect of different roles involved in moral sensitivity is analyzed.In Study 3(n=103),trustworthiness is measured at the behavioral level,and the mediating role of guilt,an important component of moral sensitivity,is analyzed.In study 4(n=68),an experimental method is used to test the causal relationship between social value orientation and trustworthiness by manipulating social value orientation.The results show that(1)Compared with agreeableness and honesty-modesty,social value orientation has a unique predictive effect on trustworthiness;(2)The relationship between social value orientation and trustworthiness is different in different dimensions of trustworthiness.Social value orientation can only predict benevolence-based trustworthiness,but not integrity-based trustworthiness;(3)Moral sensitivity in the relation between social value orientation and benevolence-based trustworthiness in the partial intermediary effect,in particular,compared with the moral sensitivity of the victim and the moral sensitivity of the observer,the moral sensitivity of the offender really plays a role in the mechanism of social value orientation affecting the benevolence-based trustworthiness.These results,on the one hand,reveal the different predictive effects of social value orientation on trustworthiness in different dimensions from the perspective of trustee,expand the perspective of trustworthiness research,and enrich the research results of personality factors that affect trustworthiness.On the other hand,the study of the psychological mechanism behind the influence of social value orientation on the trustworthiness of benevolence reveals the significance of moral sensitivity cultivation.Future research can also consider to further explore the relationship between social value orientation and trustworthiness in more different contexts...
