Analyzing Organizational Elements In Prepared English Speeches From The Perspective Of Linear Unit Grammar

It is notable that English public speaking has generated strong interest in many people.English public speaking has become a subject of demand among Chinese college students.Currently,many scholars have conducted investigations of English public speaking from various perspectives.Nevertheless,few researchers have focused on the organizational elements in English public speaking from Linear Unit Grammar perspective,leaving the thesis plenty of room for an academic study.It is novel and significant to study language from the perspective of LUG.As far as Sinclair & Mauranen(2006)concerned,organizational elements are those that are primarily concerned with the management of the discourse.And they are divided into text-oriented organizational elements and interactive organizational elements by invoking the dimensions of textual coherence and interactivity.OT elements help set up various textual relationships and present the material of the text in a coherent and well-organized way,while OI elements aim for promoting interaction and efficient accomplishment of the utterance of the text.The thesis picks42 prepared speeches as a corpus to investigate the distributions of O elements in English public speeches,with a quantitative method,and features as well as functions by virtue of a qualitative method.The findings reveal that OT elements are five times more than OI elements,which implies that the speeches are preparatory and formal.OT elements and OI elements can occur at different positions of a sentence,such as the beginning,the middle and the end.Both OT elements and OI elements can be realized by words and phrases.OT elements are mainly functioned to set up textual relationships such as elaborative,contrastive,inferential,temporal and so on.OI elements are mainly to promote interaction.OI elements have the function of drawing audiences’ attention and interest,strengthening the force of utterance and persuading the audiences.First,the thesis may provide new ideas for English learning and teaching.LUG helps people rethink the form of learning and teaching grammar.Second,the thesis may extend the scope of application of LUG and arouse people’s interest in doing more academic researches from LUG perspective.Third,the thesis may help people who are interested in public speaking deliver successful speeches and become excellent speakers.
