ECS,English Curriculum Standards(2017)clearly points out that “practising the views on English learning activity, teachers should design some comprehensive, relevant and practical activities,so that students can acquire the meaning of the text, express personal opinions, and develop multiple thinking.” Reading is an effective way to cultivate students’ thinking quality.Different levels of reading, which can practise students’ thinking,is an effective way to cultivate students’ thinking quality. The author, however, finds that reading activities done by the teacher of English still remain at literal reading nowadays which have hindered students’ thinking quality. Therefore, the thesis aims to explore the following two questions:Question1: Can the implementation of English learning activities improve students’ thinking quality?Question 2: What impact will the implementation of English learning activities have on thinking quality in ELT in reading? This research uses empirical research methods, using questionnaires, classroom observations and interviews. The author conducted experiments in two parallel classes of Grade Eight in a middle school in Hebei from September 2019 to early January 2020.Experimental class(EC)has 52 students, and control class(CC)has 54 students. The author used the same textbook and time to carry out different English reading activities.Classroom activities of EC was based on views on English learning activity, and the CC continues to use traditional teaching methods. The thinking quality of the two classes was measured before and after the experiment, classroom observation was conducted during the experiment, and interviews were conducted after the experiment. One semester later, the adapted questionnaire was used to re-test students’ thinking quality, and SPSS was used to analyze the data of four dimensions of thinking quality.Studies showed that practising views on English learning activities could improve students’ thinking quality.Students could think problems independently, analyze problems deeply and flexibly, and solve problems creatively. Therefore, the author tries to give some suggestions to cultivate students’ thinking quality.
