Identity,Standpoint And Concept:Research On The Art History Of Earlysinologist John Calvin Ferguson

This thesis takes the early Sinologist John Calvin Ferguson(1866-1945)and his research on the history of Chinese art as the research object.This thesis is carried out from three aspects: First,collect as much literature related to Ferguson as possible,and continuously analyze the multiple identities of Ferguson in the process of SinoWestern art and cultural exchange as the background to understand his standpoint and concept;Secondly,according to the aesthetic corpus materials included in Journal of the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society)(36),China Journal of Science &Art(38)to sort out the basic ideas of the China Art,as well as the differences between the western Chinese Art history research;Finally,based on his identity and his choice,behavior and attitude in Sinology studies,this thesis sorts out his standpoint and concept of explaining Chinese culture and art to the West,and researches the influence and significance of his China-centric art view on the study of Chinese art history at home and abroad.The routes and methods of this thesis: Pay attention to the accumulation and collation of literature,and sort out Ferguson’s view of Chinese art on the basis of more than one hundred original documents in newsthesiss and periodicals;Pay attention to the existing research and academic trends in the field of cultural and artistic exchange between China and the West,as well as the achievements of related disciplines to broaden the horizon of interdisciplinary research;Restore Ferguson and his art view to the historical context through historical documents and literature to research its academic influence and significance.This thesis attempts to acquire the following results: Sort out the life experience and complex identity of Ferguson and his participation in art in China,and compile A Brief Chronicle of Ferguson(1866-1945).Collect works of Ferguson included in Journal of the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society)(36),China Journal of Science & Art(38),and compile Catalogue of Works of Ferguson(1866-1945),and then translate some of his selected works on Chinese art research.From the perspective of identity,standpoint and concept,this thesis sorts out Ferguson’s research on art history,and places his China-centric art view in the background of Chinese art history research at home and abroad to research his academic value.
