| For China, which is developing rapidly in the new era, history is the experience, lesson and reference, the precipitation of the past and the guidance of the future. In the global history, the history of Rome has a pivotal position, the rise and fall of the Roman Empire is a remarkable historical event. The translation report is based on an excerpt from The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, written by Edward Gibbon,a leading British historian. The book is rich and detailed in content, from different angles of the late Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire in detail introducing the social landscape and major historical events. The main function of historical text is to record and disseminate historical information.Historical texts have the dual characteristics of both historical authenticity and literary artistry, which determines their literary popularity and historical specialization. The translation of historical texts not only has the general characteristics of literary translation, but also has the specific characteristics of historical translation.Under the guidance of Gu Zhengkun’s theory of plural complementarism of translation standard, this paper sorts out and analyzes a large number of translation examples. In recent years, translators in China have begun to pay more and more attention to translation theories with Chinese characteristics. In 1987,this theory was first put forward in the first seminar on translation theory for graduate students in China, which immediately caused a stir in China.Subsequently,it quickly spread to foreign countries and exerted an influence on foreign translation studies.According to the theory of plural complementarism of translation standard, the absolute standards of translation is the original work itself, and the highest standards is the best approximation. The absolute standards, the highest standards and the specific standards together constitute the translation standard system, and its hierarchical relationship is as follows: absolute standard — the highest standard — the specific standard. The absolute standards and highest standards of translation is one-dimensional,while the specific standards is multiple. There is a dialectical relationship in the translation standard system. There is also a primary and secondary relationship among the standards in the translation standard system, and this primary and secondary relationship will change. In a word, the value, temporality and space of the main standards and the secondary standards are relative. The theory of plural complementarism of translation standard proposed by Gu Zhengkun not only contributes to the theoretical study of translation standards, but also is of great significance for solving the problems in translation practice.Translators are no longer rigidly bound to one translation standard, but can absorb the advantages of various translation skills,so as to carry out translation activities better.Readers can appreciate the translation works from different angles, selectively absorb the information in the translation works, and cultivate their all-round aesthetic ability. This report is divided into the introduction part and five chapters. The introduction briefly introduces the main structure, research significance, research ideas and current research status at home and abroad. The first chapter introduces the background of the translation project, including the translation material and its author, historical texts and translation difficulties. The second chapter is divided into three parts: pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation,which briefly introduces the process of this translation practice. The third chapter is the literature review part, introducing the proposer of translation theory and the deep theoretical basis of the theory, and briefly explaining the core content and practical significance of the theory. The fourth chapter is case analysis, which analyzes the typical mistakes in translation from three aspects: comprehension, expression and adaptation, and summarizes the experience. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which reviews the whole process of translation practice, points out the author’s shortcomings and improvements, summarizes her gains and experiences, and puts forward her expectations for the future, hoping to provide experience and value. |
