The year 2020 is the final year of poverty eradication in China, however, material poverty eradication does not necessarily mean "psychological" poverty eradication, nor does it mean that the intergenerational transmission of poverty has been stopped;at the same time, the study confirms that although society and schools at all levels have given more attention and support to the formerly poor students, the mental health of poor students and non-poor students still differs to a certain extent. Therefore, the psychological condition of students who have been lifted out of material poverty is still an important element of school education, especially mental health education. The mental health of an individual is influenced by the interaction of its own and environmental factors, and is a state of equilibrium reached between the individual’s internal psychological structure and the external environment.Social support,as an environmental resource, has an important impact on the mental health of individuals, and as a research variable, the connotation of social support includes both objectively real support and subjectively perceived support and the degree of utilization of support. The present study was conducted to analyze the relationship between social support and psychological health, with the aim of providing useful reference for targeted mental health education. In this study,651 students from the first to the third year of junior high school were selected based on certain assessment criteria, and the Mental Health Scale for Chinese Middle School Students compiled by Wang Jisheng and the Social Support Scale for Adolescents compiled by Ye Yuemei et al.were used to administer the test.580 valid questionnaires were obtained, including 230 questionnaires for "poor students" and 350 questionnaires for non-poor students.230 questionnaires and 350 questionnaires for non-poor students, with a valid return rate of 89.01%.The data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test,one-way ANOVA and regression analysis using SPSS23.0,and the results were as follows.1.the social support level and mental health level of the junior high school students who had escaped from poverty were significantly lower than those of the non-poor students.2.There were some significant differences in the level of mental health of junior high school students who had escaped from poverty on three demographic dimensions:grade, gender, and whether they were only children.3.There were significant differences in the social support level of the out-of-poverty junior high school students in terms of whether they were only children or not.4.The overall social support of out-of-poverty junior high school students significantly predicted the overall level of mental health. The objective support and subjective support dimensions were significant predictors of mental health, with the objective support dimension having the strongest influence, while the support utilization dimension did not reach a significant level.Based on the above results, the study proposes the following recommendations for the current situation of social support for junior high school students who have escaped from poverty: to continue to consolidate and improve the level of objective support through a well-constructed social support network;to improve the level of social support perceived and utilized by junior high school students who have escaped from poverty by focusing on correct attribution, group counseling, and positive parenting methods.
