Critical thinking is to use appropriate criteria to judge and evaluate the authenticity of things objectively.Information changes rapidly today.In such a world,critical thinking is the basic ability that people today should possess.Therefore,it is necessary and urgent to integrate the cultivation of critical thinking into basic education.Based on this situation,junior high school English teaching should follow the core competency of English as a foreign language.As an important part of junior high school English teaching,English reading teaching can help students develop in an all-round way,and it is an important way to cultivate students’ critical thinking.The purpose of this study is to explore effective ways to cultivate students’ critical thinking through junior high school English reading teaching.The study aims to answer the following two questions: 1)What are the ways to design a junior high school English reading teaching with the purpose of cultivating junior high students’ critical thinking? 2)Can this junior high school English teaching model effectively improve junior high students’ critical thinking?This study selected Class 11 A Grade Seven from Guang’an Friendship Middle School in Sichuan Province as the experimental class and Class 13 A Grade Seven as the control class to conduct a teaching experiment which lasts a semester.Then this study used SPSS to analyze the data,trying to find out whether the junior high school English reading teaching model can improve students’ critical thinking.The results show that teachers can adopt the PWP reading teaching model,use teaching strategies like prediction and brainstorming in pre-reading.At while-reading stage,teachers can adopt strategies like questioning and encouraging students to question in class,guiding students to pay attention to the writing logic,drawing mind maps,inferring the author’s attitude and writing intention.Text recreation and self-evaluation can be employed to cultivate students’ critical thinking at post-readingstage.Junior high students’ critical thinking ability can be effectively improved thanks to the junior high school English reading teaching model and strategies.
