Teaching materials are the main source for students to learn,as well as the main tool for teachers to carry out teaching activities and the main way to achieve teaching goals.It plays an very important role in front-line teaching.In order to meet the new Needs of the Times and Educational Development,many different versions of textbooks have appeared in front-line teaching along with the deepening of education and teaching curriculum reforms in recent years.Furthermore,there have even been the phenomena of using different textbooks in different districts of the same city.All these have brought great troubles for teachers and students.Therefore,how to make the full and efficient use of existing teaching materials,the scientific analysis and evaluation of teaching materials are particularly important.In this paper,it compares the English textbooks for students in grade 9 published by People’s Education and the English textbooks for students in grade 9 published by Shanghai Education Press.The paper uses documentation,comparative analysis method,questionnaire survey and interview to conduct the comparative research.This paper is a school-based study.It is based on the actual situation of Jijia No.1Middle School in Gaoling District of Xi’an(now the No.8 Middle School of Economic Development Zone in Xi’an).We can know about the teachers and students’ attitude towards the textbook in grade 9 which is published by Shanghai Education Press in this paper.At last,some suggestions are put forwards on how to make better use of teaching materials in education and teaching activities.The specific comparative study in this article starts from the analysis surface structures and deep structures of the two kinds of textbooks.The surface structure mainly includes the compilation system,content selection,column design and illustrations of the two sets of textbooks.The deep structure analysis is to compare the emotional attitude,cultural awareness,language knowledge and language skills of the textbooks.This paper also summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the two sets of textbooks.The analysis and survey results show that,in terms of surface structure,the compilation of textbooks of PEP is more logic in disciplinary knowledge.What’s more,the topics of textbooks of PEP are more close to students’ life and students are more receptive this teaching materials.The two sets of textbooks have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of surface structure.There are sufficient columns for listening,speaking and reading skills in Pep Edition,but insufficient columns for intercultural communication competence and cultural awareness.The teaching materials of Oxford edition of Shanghai need to add the columns about the design of listening and oral expression dialogues.In addition,appendixes about grammar,the notes of teaching materials and listening materials are supposed to add in this edition.From the perspective of the deep structure of the textbook,the compilation of vocabulary,cultural awareness and language skills in the People’s Education edition are more systematic and reasonable.However,the two sets of textbooks also have some shortcomings and advantages: the textbook of People’s Education edition lacks the penetration of reading strategies.It even lacks the guidance and cultivation of writing ability.The grammar design of Shanghai Oxford English textbook is very clear and methodical.The two editions should be more systematic and more extensive in the compilation and design in phonetic knowledge.
