Bauman’s Diagnosis Of Modernity And Its Solutions

Bauman’s exploration of modernity and post-modernity is quite profound and has his own unique experience and insight.In the face of the shortcomings of modernity,Bauman put forward his own solution.Exploring his modernity thought and comparing it with Marx’s critical thought of modernity can not only make us deeply understand the characteristics and manifestations of modern society,but also help us to grasp the similarities and differences between Bauman and Marx on the issue of modernity.In order to better analyze Bauman’s "flowing modernity" ideological value and deficiency.Bauman’s theory of modernity absorbs Max Weber’s idea of "rationalization ",Levinas’ s ethics of "other",Simmel’s culture-modernity and Giddens’ theory of "modernity" in the ideological source.In the diagnosis of modernity,Bauman reveals the expression of modernity from the uncertainty of human society’s living condition and the lack of individual security and the generalization of the internal contradiction of modernity.In addition,the characteristics of "mobility" in modern society are analyzed from the aspects of social stratification,the breakage of human ties and the irrationality of individual behavior.Through reflection and criticism,Bauman gives his own plan,mainly from the national,individual and social three levels to explore the shortcomings of modernity to human challenges.He advocates the construction of the concept of community,the establishment of global political and capacity government;the reconstruction of individual moral responsibility,the reconstruction of "for the other" morality;the sound of the social security system,the protection of human basic income,the protection of social,and so onBy comparing Bauman’s modern thought with Marx’s critical thought of modernity,we can see that although there are differences between them in literary style,temperament spirit and value orientation,Bauman’s modern thought is the continuation of Marx’s criticism of modernity.This paper emphasizes the similarities and differences between the two in the attribution diagnosis of modernity and the solution.This reveals Marx’s influence on Bauman’s modernity thought and the enrichment and development of Bauman’s "flowing modernity" on Marx’s modernity thought.The theory of "modernity of flow" still has some limitations,which need to be further thought and studied.
