Cultural-loaded word is closely related to a culture’s featured history, literature, custom or natural environment.Because of quite different cultures in China and English-speaking countries, there may be lexical gaps caused by cultural vacancy in interpreting. Therefore,to interpret cultural-loaded words is one of the greatest challenges in C-E or E-C interpreting and the interpreters should deal with the difficulties caused by lexical gaps with appropriate methods. This thesis is a case study based on the author’s C-E consecutive interpretation of an academic lecture named A Brief Analysis of Chinese Dialect Vocabulary Investigation. The lecture was held in October 2020 in Ningxia University. This thesis takes the dialect words mentioned in this lecture as examples to analyze difficulties and corresponding coping methods of interpreting culture-loaded words. The thesis consists of four parts:task descriptions, literature review, case analysis and conclusion. In the case analysis, difficulties in the interpretation are divided into non-correspondence in referential meaning,in intralingual meaning and in pragmatic meaning in English according to the classification of semiology. Then, based on different types of Creative Treason and the common strategies used in culture-loaded word interpretation, the thesis provides feasible interpreting methods and makes analysis of the cases in the interpretation task. After the discussion,a conclusion was drawn that the theory of Creative Treason can be applied in interpretation, namely the vacancies of different meanings can be filled with personalized interpretation, creative misinterpretation, explanatory interpretation,or abridged interpretation according to the contexts. It is hoped that the thesis can be a reference for the future researchers to apply Creative Treason into solving the difficulties in interpretation.
