A Study On The Narrative Of The Scene Of Moment In Beijing

Moment in Peking is one of Lin Yutang’s most classic works,and an important feature is the scene-oriented narrative.In this thesis,text interpretation and theory of space narration are used to analyse and explain the text from the perspective of scene narration,and to analyse the functional structure of the scene in the text based on the specific scenes of Moment in Peking.Lin Yutang described many grand but detailed daily life to show the aesthetic and artistic Chinese lifestyle from his perspective,and also demonstrated his aesthetic choice and cultural standpoint as " The Bridge Between Chinese Culture and Western Culture" in the literary activities.Besides,these scenes with aesthetic functions and traditional Chinese cultural connotations also participated in and organize the narrative.In the construction of the scene,the novel forms a scene narrative that uses the scene to organize the plot and promote the narrative process and then establishes "imagery system" in another scene under the text.This dissertation has three parts including introduction,main body,and conclusion.The introduction explains the applicability of space narrative theory to scene narrative,clarifies the relationship between space and scene involved in the thesis,combs the research status of Moment in Peking,and states the reason and significance of the topic.The first chapter discusses the daily scenes described in Moment in Peking and the Chinese traditional cultural connotations contained in them,showing that the author describes the scene detailed with a cultural aesthetic vision and an attitude of appreciation and admiration.The slenderness of folk customs and activities reflect the author’s cultural standpoints.The second chapter discusses the function of the scene in the narrative.It analyses how the scene organizes the plot and participates in the narrative through transformation and carries out the narrative process from the aspects of the subsection of the scene,the literary function of the specific scene,and the variability of space.The third chapter discusses the symbolic metaphor meaning of specific scenes.It goes deep into the space narrative,explaining the aesthetic meaning of the narrative space in Moment in Peking,and constructing the "imagery system" with scene behind the text.The "imagery system" includes the suggestiveness,symbolism,and metaphor of space.The conclusion part summarizes the narrative characteristics and aesthetic functions of the scenes in Moment in Peking and discusses the use of scene narratives in Lin’s novels to show the characteristics of Chinese culture.Lin used novel to help Chinese culture express to the west even the worldwide.
