A Cognitive Semantic Study Of English Phrasal Verbs With V+over Structure

English phrasal verbs are the usual combination of verbs plus one or two particles,which has a high frequency in English expression.Due to the polysemous nature of phrasal verbs,it is difficult to grasp,which has always been a major difficulty for English learning.Cognitive linguists believe that the rationale for exploring phrasal verbs should start with the particles that adhere to the verb.This paper takes phrasal verbs with over as the research object and analyzes the semantic diversity of phrasal verbs.Based on the semantic analysis results of Taylor(1989)and Lakoff(1987)on the particle over,this paper uses the image schema theory and conceptual metaphor theory illustrate the semantic construction process of the v+over structure.This research uses the American Contemporary Corpus(COCA)as a research tool,extracts the v+over structure that is used frequently in the top 100.According to the basic meanings of particle over in the phrasal verbs is divided into six image schema: the horizontal movement,the crossing movement,the downward movement,the container image schema,the covering image schema,the upper and static image schema.The phrasal verbs under the horizontal movement,the crossing movement,the downward movement and the container image schema that express dynamic meanings.The phrasal verbs under the covering image schema,the upper and static image schema that express static meanings.Among them,the phrasal verbs under the horizontal movement have the most abundant meanings,they are projected from the spatial domain to the abstract domains.These abstract domains mainly include: visual domain,thought domain,emotional domain,attitude domain,communication domain.The phrasal verbs under the container image schema are projected from the spatial domain to the emotional domain.It mostly expresses “explosive and full of certain emotions”.The phrasal verbs under the covering image schema,expand from basic meanings to abstract meanings.It mostly expresses the metaphorical meanings of“involve something”,“prohibit doing something”,“stay somewhere temporarily”,“conceal someone”.The phrasal verbs under the upper and static image schema,projected from the space domain to the social domain.It mostly expresses the metaphorical meanings of “the management and control of someone or something”.From the features of verbs in the v + over structure,verbs in the v + over structure are mostly dynamic monosyllabic verbs which are the basic English vocabulary.The more frequently used verbs and the particle over are combined into phrasal verbs,the more meaningful they are.The verb and the particle over affect each other semantically.Under the same image schema,semantically similar verbs can often be matched with the particle over.The various meanings of the particle over are related to a certain degree,and most of the abstract meanings are derived from spatial meanings.
