Consecutive interpreting plays an important role in promoting international communication.In this article,the author analyzes the consecutive interpreting methods of English long sentences based on the interpretive theory that emphasizes the pursuit of meaning equivalence.Based on the interpretive theory,the author selects long sentences from the CATTI Level 2 Interpretation Test from 2014 to 2018 for analysis.The author firstly introduces the origin and development of the interpretive theory,focusing on the three steps of the theory.Secondly,the definition and characteristics of English long sentences are introduced and four consecutive interpreting methods are summarized—splitting,amplification,reversing and recasting.To reduce the pressure of consecutive interpreting,splitting can be adopted to split the long sentence into several short sentences.Amplification can be adopted to complete the omitted parts of English long sentences in consecutive interpreting.English long sentences contain many modifiers such as attributives and adverbials,and their positions are different from those of Chinese.Reversing can be used under these circumstances.Recasting can be used when it is difficult to interpret a long sentence with only one method.Finally,the reasons for the difficulties in interpreting English long sentences are summarized-the complexity of English long sentences,the immediacy of consecutive interpreting,the differences between Chinese and Western thinking,the complexity of source language knowledge,and the lack of the interpreter’s theories and methods.This research analyzes the interpretation of English long sentences from the perspective of the interpretive theory and corpus.It can help interpreters better combine the theory with practice,and be prepared for interpretation learning and practice of long sentences.
