In recent years,Chinese science fiction has been widely concerned by readers and commentators.Ken Liu,together with Elizabeth Hanlon,Zac Haluza,Adam Lanphier and Holger Nahm, translate the short stories collection The Wandering Earth. It was published by Head of Zeus Ltd.in 2017.This thesis selects some examples from Chinese and English version of this short stories collection.Based on George Steiner’s hermeneutics theory, this thesis analyzes the translation process of the short stories collection The Wandering Earth by case study, and studies the reflection of translator’s subjectivity in the process of translating Chinese science fiction into English.Firstly.this thesis makes a systematic literature review on the research of George Steiner’s hermeneutics theory, the translation of Chinese science fiction and the translator’s subjectivity. Then it introduces the four steps of George Steiner’s hermeneutics(trust.aggression, incorporation and compensation). This thesis mainly tries to analyze the translator’s subjectivity manifested in the four steps in the English translation of the short stories collection The Wandering Earth from the perspective of hermeneutics and how it is reflected in the translation process. It is found that the translator’s initial trust in the short stories collection The Wandering Earth is mainly due to the translator’s trust and interest in the selected author and text.Due to the differences between Chinese and English languages and cultures, the translator aggresses the original text The Wandering Earth, breaks the shell of the original, extracts the essence of the original, and makes changes or creative translation in the translation. In the incorporation stage, the translator mainly adopts domestication strategy, supplemented by foreignization strategy to absorb the content and form of The Wandering Earth, and tries to retain the language and cultural characteristics of the original text while pursuing the readability and acceptability of the translation. Finally,in the compensation stage, the translator compensates the linguistic and cultural aspects of The Wandering Earth, complementing and completing the sentence elements of the translated sentence, making them conform to the syntactic rules of English, and can fully express the meaning of the original sentence and compensate the cultural connotation of the original text. This thesis proves the guiding value of Steiner’s hermeneutics theory to the study of translation process, and interprets the realization of translator’s subjectivity in four stages of hermeneutics. It not only provides a new perspective for the translation study of science fiction, but also helps Chinese science fiction go abroad,so that more foreign readers can better understand China through science fiction.
