Writing,as an indispensable part of four basic skills of English learning,can reflect students’ overall language level.However,“writing” is a relatively weak part among all of the four basic skills.The situation occurs because most of high school students are doing large amounts of passive reading and ignore the importance of combining both reading and writing.With the application of the continuation task in more and more exams,instructing students how to write has become an important part of English teaching in senior high schools.As one of the variants of the continuation task,the “multi-round continuation” task based on literary works is considered to have more advantages in promoting English learning.Based on this,this study combines adapted English literature with the “multi-round continuation” in order to make students understand and appreciate the literature while promoting the development of students’ English core competency.The theoretical foundations include Krashen’s input hypothesis,Swain’s output hypothesis and interactive alignment theory.Two classes are selected to be the participants of the experiment and the four research instruments are implemented,which include questionnaires,tests,interview and the think-aloud method.The Railway Children,a literature book from the bookworms published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press,is selected as the material for continuation.The “multi-round continuation” model was conducted in the experiment class(EC)for 16 weeks.The research questions are as followed:(1)What is the effect of the “multi-round continuation” model based on adapted English literature on English writing level of high school students?(2)Which aspects of students’ key competency can be improved after adopting the“multi-round continuation” model? In order to solve the first research question,this research uses tests and think-aloud method.Both of the continuation tasks in the College Entrance Examination of Zhejiang Province are selected as the sample tests.Think-aloud method is used to supplement the results gained by the tests.In order to solve the second research question,reliability and validity of the questionnaires are checked.Questionnaires are distributed to the students in the experiment class,and the results obtained by the questionnaires are supplemented by the interview.This study combines qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis,which can complement each other and make the results more convincing.The “multi-round continuation” model requires students to “read-write-reflect-read againwrite again-reflect again”.Students are supposed to focus on the plot,emotion,logic and language of the original text and improve their English level in a real context.After the 16 weeks of the experiment,it is found that:(1)Conducting the “multi-round continuation” model based on adapted English literature can improve students’ writing ability;(2)By combining English literature and “multi-round continuation” model,the development of students’ core competency is promoted.This model also enables the all-round development of students’ language ability,cultural awareness,learning ability and thinking quality.
