Although the Xinmang period lasted only fourteen years in history,Wang Mang attached importance to Confucianism,carried out "restructuring" in economy,politics,culture,etc.,unified measurement,paid attention to ancient Chinese classics,reformed the currency system,and changed the characters.Today,with the development of archaeology,we often find remains on the inscriptions on bronzes or ironware in this period.The words cast or engraved on bronzes and ironware in this period are called "Xinmang bronze inscriptions".Compared with the previous generation of bronze inscription in Yin and Zhou dynasties and seal script in Qin and Han dynasties,Xinmang bronze inscription has its own distinctive features in terms of body structure and calligraphy art,which is worthy of special study on philology and calligraphy,and can be used for reference in contemporary calligraphy seal cutting creation.However,due to the short time,the lack of materials and the lack of systematic collection,the research is also difficult.Therefore,few researchers pay attention to this and this is a shortcoming in the study of calligraphy history.In this paper,the handed down Xinmang bronze inscriptions are collected,and ancient documents,epigraphy and archaeological discoveries are compared and revised.On this basis,the handed down and unearthed Xinmang bronze inscriptions are studied in detail and comprehensively from two aspects of philology and calligraphy,with the method of combining iconology and philology.To highlight the calligraphy features of Xinmang bronze inscription,the author also collected the calligraphy remains of this period,such as ink and stone carvings,handed down from ancient times and archaeological discoveries,so as to compare the carriers of different materials with each other.To study the physical characteristics of Xinmang bronze inscriptions,a comparative study on the physical characteristics of Xinmang bronze inscriptions was made word by word with Xiaozhuan in Shuo Wen Jie Zi,Han Bamboo Slips and Seal Characters in Qing Dynasty.On this basis,the four characteristics of Xinmang bronze inscription calligraphy are summarized: the beauty of decoration of font,the beauty of change of pen,the beauty of flowing lines and the beauty of harmony of composition.To provide the IV academic community with convenience for further research,this paper made two kinds of data tables as appendices,namely,Xinmang bronze inscription storage table and comparison table of Xinmang bronze inscription seal characters,Shuo Wen Jie Zi,Han Bamboo Slips and Qing Seal Characters.This paper mainly consists of the following four parts:The first part is "Introduction to Academic Background in Xinmang Period".According to historical data,this paper summarizes and discusses the tendency of retro-ism in Xinmang period and the rise and development of ancient classics in this period,and explores the academic background in Xinmang period.The second part is "calligraphy art in Xinmang period".This paper classifies the calligraphy remains in Xinmang period,and classifies the stone carvings,seals and ink calligraphy remains handed down from ancient times and archaeological discoveries in Xinmang period into one category;Make another kind of calligraphy on weights and measures,bronze mirrors,money and square plates.Referring to the graphic data,this paper analyzes the calligraphy aesthetic factors of each work in detail,and summarizes the artistic style characteristics of each work by comparing and analyzing the composition layout,body posture,brushwork and lines: ink calligraphy is elegant and exquisite;Stone carving calligraphy is simple and straightforward;Seal calligraphy is implicit and vigorous;Gold calligraphy is dignified and elegant.The third part is "the artistic features of bronze inscription calligraphy in Xinmang period".Through the second part,we summarize the style and characteristics of various artistic works,and sum up the overall calligraphy style of Xinmang period and the uniqueness of Xinmang’s Bronze inscription calligraphy.By adopting the method of comparative study,this paper makes a comparison of the characters’ use,writing and artistic features between the inscriptions in Xinmang period,Shuo Wen Jie Zi and seal script of Qing Dynasty,and explores the uniqueness of Xinmang bronze inscriptions calligraphy from the aspects of font,pen,line and composition.The fourth part is the conclusion.Firstly,the content of the paper is summarized.Secondly,the author’s research results are discussed,and finally,more scholars are expected to devote themselves to the research of the bronze inscription calligraphy in Xinmang period.Because of limited information,there are some omissions in the combed and integrated information,hoping to get scholars’ advice to make the academic circles more clear about calligraphy style in Xinmang period.
