| It is normally considered a huge impediment to translators that in what way can they effectively translate English long sentences which are complex in structure and plentiful in component into Chinese,to convey meanings to Chinese receptors in a clear and specific way.When dealing with the translation of English long sentences,translators should not only have a good command of bilingual language,but to be under the instruction of certain translation approaches.Long sentences are widely used in the review article of national defense—"Captain Birch and Lord Selkirk on National Defense".To examine long sentences of the text in terms of communication is not only significant to convey the communicative meaning,but provide a communicative explanation of converting English long sentences.Based on the supposition above,this paper,through adopting the concepts such as direct translation,indirect translation and the ostensive-inference principle in Relevance-Theoretic Translation Theory,tries to find out how to translate English long sentences into Chinese appropriately to make it accommodates to Chinese reader’s relevance expectation,and could be understood by Chinese readers to the most extend.This paper is composed by five parts,first is introduction;the first chapter will introduce how the practice project is processed;in the second chapter,the theoretic basis of analysis will be proposed;chapter three is about case studies which concentrates on English long sentences from the text from the perspective of Relevance-Theoretic Translation Theory;the last part will summarize the findings as well as shortcomings of this study.This paper concludes the translation strategies of the text’s long sentences in two parts by sorting translation examples collected during translation,and combining the concepts of contextual inferring,direct translation and indirect translation.The result shows the concept of direct translation and indirect translation is contributed to the guidance of translating English long sentences.In the specific translation practice,translators often need to consider a variety of strategies to convey the informative intention and establish the optimal relevance between the original text and the TL readers.As for the simple compound long sentences and simple compound long sentences with proper nouns,which the translator can effortlessly achieve the maximal relevance with the help of contextual inference and the communicative meaning is easily to be suggested in the context of target language,may be translated literally or that with annotation to restore their stylistic features;and for those complicated long sentences such as long sentences with extended modifiers and complex long sentences,which are hard to seek for relevance by inferring the context,in order to meet target language’s context and target readers’relevance expectations,could be translated under the guidance of liberal translation strategy in proposition of the communicative meaning is the furthest suggested to readers in an accuracy way. |
