| In classroom teaching,teachers not only use voiced language to convey knowledge to students,but also need body language to assist teaching and communicate emotions.Teachers’ body language belongs to the category of non-verbal behaviors.It is an important teaching skill for teachers and a medium of communication between teachers and students.In English classroom teaching,teachers use body language to make English knowledge specific and vivid which can encourage students and promote their English learning.This study takes a senior high school in Baoding City,Hebei Province as a research base and collects data and materials mainly through three investigation methods:classroom observation,questionnaire survey,and teacher-student interviews.Research questions in this study are as follows:(1)What are the characteristics of body language used by senior high school English teachers?(2)What is the effect of using body language in the classroom?(3)How does the use of body language by teachers in senior high school English classroom affect students’ classroom participation?After research,the main findings of this article are as follows.First of all,senior high school English teachers consciously use body language in classroom teaching,but most teachers do not have a comprehensive grasp of related theoretical knowledge of body language.Secondly,there are some differences in the use of body language among teachers with different teaching experience.Young teachers use more gestures and eye contact,and experienced teachers interact with students more in the classroom.Finally,through questionnaires and interviews,it is proved that teacher’s body language can affect students’classroom participation.Based on research findings and data analysis,this research puts forward the following recommendations.Firstly,English teachers in senior high school should use body language reasonably and master the degree of using body language in class.In classroom teaching,teachers should not blindly imitate other teachers’ use of body language,and they should consider factors such as their own personality,specialties and hobbies,and the age of the students.Secondly,when using body language,teachers should pay attention to the coordinated use of eyes,gestures and other body parts.Thirdly,teachers ought to avoid the use of negative body language and meaningless body language.Finally,teachers can consult body language related books and literature,observe excellent teaching cases,understand the types of body language,summarize various forms of body movements,and screen out the body language that is most conducive to classroom teaching. |
