In the age of visualization,nonconformal and creative thinking is the key to unleashing visual communication’s potential.In current artistic context,transcending expressive techniques through the diversification and integration of painting materials has always been a focus of research and practice topic in the study of illustration.Previous studies and practices often focus on the transformation of visual language results from technological innovation.This study aims at exploring the new form that the language of painting that could be trending in this visual era culture.A multi-level approach will be taken to evaluate the expression techniques.This study firstly summarizes the developments of illustration in the landscape of art development to discover the cultural characteristics and ideas at the turning points of the means of illustration,which points out the pattern that innovations in the art of illustration normally result from a change in materials and techniques from the aesthetic perspective of painting.It then examines the potential development and extension of illustration arts that can be achieved with the combination method of pastels and water-based materials under the general trend of arts development.Finally,the feasibility of this creation theory and expressive techniques is verified through practice.Through research and practice,we draw the following conclusion:the combination of pastels and water-based materials is a sign of the extension and enrichment of illustration’s expressive technique and media;this extension of expressive media from painting to illustration conforms to the current art development trend.The spiritual and ideology reflected by the materials can enhance the theme of the illustration,which enables a easier resonance with the audience when communicating the idea.This study will provide theory foundation and evidence for reference for the multi-media expression methods of illustrations in the era of visualization,and provide a new idea for the follow-up study of expressive languages.
