Confucian philosophy,as the main component of Chinese traditional cultural value and its ideological system,is valued by scholars of different periods and has produced numerous achievements of academic research. In recent years, with the deepening of globalization as well as cultural and academic exchanges between China and the rest of the world, scholars both at home and abroad have a more in-depth discussion on the value excavation and system construction of Confucian philosophy, which has been playing a constructive role in promoting philosophical dialogues between China and the West and mutual learning among civilizations.Among the works discussing Confucian philosophy, the Onto-Cosmological Reconstruction of Confucian Philosophy by Chung-Ying Cheng is one of the representatives. The book systematically interprets the core concepts and context system of Confucian philosophy, with a high academic value. The report extracts some typical chapters of the work as the source text for translation, and discusses several specific issues arising in the translating process.Bearing uniqueness and advantages comparing to western philosophy,Confucian philosophy is a high unification of Chinese characteristics,Chinese style, and Chinese cultural confidence. Therefore, special requirements are asserted for the translation of such philosophical academic texts. The translator of the practice adopts Roger T.Ames’ s thoughts on the translation of traditional Chinese Classics as guidance.Based on numerous translation practices of Chinese philosophical classics,Roger T.Ames puts forward a series of translation thoughts, such as“cultural translation in harmony and diversity”,“translation as interpretation” and “the contextualization of term translation”,which have brought strong guiding significance for the translation of Confucian philosophical works. In the report, the translator makes an analysis of the source text and discusses its translation methods. At the lexical level, the translator mainly discusses the translation of expressions loading Chinese philosophical connotations in the source text.In terms of Chinese philosophical concepts, free translation and annotation are inclined to be used.Regarding the translation of words derived from Chinese historical allusions, the translator prefers using Amplification flexibly.Syntactically, the translator focuses on the translation of parallel structures in the source text, and accounts for their dialectical connotation; In addition, for sentential quotations from Chinese philosophical classics, the translator advocates Free Translation, with phonetic notation and annotation as supplements when dealing with the philosophical concepts.Textually, the translator suggests clarifying the discourse topic of the source text first and keep a consistency in the translation; As to the translation of topic-shift markers, the translator advocates using Omission flexibly according to the context.Through this translation practice, the translator has a clearer understanding of the Confucianism system and its core values, while gains a more realistic experience together with a rational understanding of the guiding role of Roger T.Ames’ s thoughts on the translation of traditional Chinese Classics. It is expected that this report can provide a reference for the translation practice of philosophical academic texts.
