Abstract/Summary:
This essay is based on the study results of word-learning strategies and application-used teaching,in order to discover Elementary Chinese student’s word-learning strategies,beliefs,and problems.This essay used a questionnaire to survey 19 students,who are learning Elementary Chinese at Beijing Foreign Studies University Foshan Graduate Institute,and then performed an experiment.One teacher used Quizlet as a learning tool in a class while another did not.This essay compares data from two classes to find the differences in students’ strategies and beliefs before and after using Quizlet,and with and without using Quizlet.We use this data to measure the impact of using Quizlet as a learning tool on students’ word-learning strategies and beliefs.After the experiment,this essay finds:(1)Beginner students believe "vocabulary should be studied and used",then"vocabulary should be picked up naturally",and lastly on"vocabulary should be memorized".The problem with beginner students is they don’t agree that "vocabulary should be memorized" and their "vocabulary should be studied and used" as much as intermediate or advanced students.(2)Beliefs of students who don’t have prior Chinese learning experience are more easily affected by Quizlet,and have optimistic changes.The beliefs of students who have Chinese learning experience are less affected by Quizlet.(3)The order of word-learning strategies for beginner students is cognitive,social-affective strategy,and meta cognitive.The problem they have is their cognitive,social-affective,and Meta cognitive strategies are both at a high level,but not as high as intermediate or advanced students.(4)Quizlet has the greatest impact on beginners with no experience,and then on intermediate and advanced student,lastly on students between beginner and intermediate.For students without experience,the greatest change on their strategies after using Quizlet is meta cognitive strategies,then cognitive strategies,and lastly on social-affective strategies.(5)All students have a positive attitude towards using Quizlet for learning words.Conclusion of the study:using Quizlet when teaching words can enhance student’s learning efficiency,improve their learning beliefs and strategies.In order to enhance the efficiency of using Quizlet while teaching and learning,we gave advice for flashcard design at the end of the study.For example,teachers should keep an eye on word-chunks,design flashcards based on real circumstances,show Pinyin,divide flashcards into two-fold according to their length-one short and one long,one card should correspond to one translation.In the meantime,the teacher should be a strict supervisor and tell students clearly what should they do.Don’t ignore character writing practice.Quizlet can’t replace the blackboard totally.Teachers should keep an eye on students’ speaking output.
