A Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting Of The “Digital Media Culture” Workshop Guided By Syntactic Linearity

With the advent of the digital age,researches on media culture,especially youth culture,have become more and more important.In response to this trend,Professor Chang Jiang from the School of Communication of Shenzhen University organized this workshop.The theme of this workshop was “the expression of youth culture in the digital age”.Five speakers gave unique opinions on the concepts,practices,expressions and struggles of media culture in the contemporary digital media environment.This practice report is about simulated Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpreting,based on the “digital media culture” workshop.In the source language,the five speakers deliver their speeches in a high speed,with few pauses and much redundant words and information.Moreover,this material contains lots of professional terms,Internet buzzwords as well as complex information.The syntactic linearity is the primary principle in simultaneous interpreting.Therefore,the author chooses Syntactic Linearity strategy as guidance and adopts five techniques combined with the strategy to simulate this practice,including segmentation,anticipation,addition,omission,and conversion.The purpose of this practice is for interpreter to combine the interpreting knowledge with specific practice,accumulate practical experience and improve the interpreting performance through a simulated simultaneous interpreting of a real workshop.Through in-depth analysis of this interpreting practice,the author has recognized he should further improve bilingual ability,accumulate encyclopedic knowledge and study interpreting theories and strategies to become a qualified interpreter.In addition,the author hopes to share his own experience to provide reference for other interpreting lovers,and makes his own contribution to the dissemination of media culture.
