This paper selects page 545 to 561 in the second volume of Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu written by Yuan Tingdong as the translation and research object. From the acceptability of translation, the author uses methods of hermeneutics, like understanding and interpretation, chooses fusion of horizons as the theoretical guidance, and probes into translation strategies and translation methods of the English translation of the Chinese historical and cultural work. This paper is divided into four chapters.Chapter One analyzes the features of the source text, including the linguistic and functional features.Chapter Two details the translation process, including three stages: pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.Chapter Three introduces two processes and three forms of fusion of horizons.Chapter Four is a case study.According to the forms of fusion of horizons, the author gives examples to prove the feasibility of using the theory to guide translation. In terms of Gadamer’s fusion of horizons, the author adopts domestication as the primary translation strategy and foreignization as the supplement translation strategy, and he uses translation methods such as omission, paraphrase, and transliteration plus annotation,in order to achieve fusion of horizons between the source text and the target readers. The translation process shows that fusion of horizons can better fuse the horizon of the source text with the horizon of target readers, making the target text more acceptable and meeting the expectations of target readers. This paper is a practical report on the English translation of Chinese historical literature, which may provide reference for the translation of such literature and promote cultural exchange between the East and the West. |
