A Study On Teacher Questioning Strategy In Senior High School English Reading Class From The Perspective Of Critical Thinking Disposition

Abstract/Summary:
In recent years,critical thinking has been a hot topic in domestic and foreign research.With the implementation of The High School English Curriculum Standard,the cultivation of students’ critical thinking in English teaching has attracted much attention from researchers.Reading class is important to cultivate students’ critical thinking.What’s more,teacher questioning is a bridge that can effectively enable teachers to interact with students,and is a tool to cultivate students’ critical thinking in reading instruction.There are many studies on critical thinking and teacher questioning at home and abroad respectively,but few have combined them.Therefore,based on the current situation of students’ critical thinking disposition in the school(Qianwei No.1 Middle School),this dissertation studies the main questioning strategies used by three teachers in the school,teacher questioning strategies that can promote critical thinking disposition and how these questioning strategies to promote students’ critical thinking disposition.The dissertation adopts three research methods: classroom observation,questionnaire and interview.Firstly,the CCTDI questionnaire test was distributed to110 students in three classes.Based on Facione’s critical thinking disposition standard,the current situation of the students’ critical thinking disposition of the school was analyzed.Secondly,integrating Wang Duqin(2008)and Wu(1993)classification standard,framework of teacher questioning strategy classification in the research was formed.The main questioning strategies used by the three teachers in English reading instruction were observed and sorted out.And teachers’ questioning strategies which can promote students critical thinking disposition were analyzed.Thirdly,the analysis of three teaching cases demonstrated how these teachers questioning strategies promote students’ critical thinking disposition.The following conclusion has been drawn.On the one hand,current situation of the students’ critical thinking disposition is not satisfying,and seven dimensions of the critical thinking disposition also keep a low level.On the other hand,teachers mainly use probing and simplification strategy in question design stage.In addition,design strategy still is the main strategy which can cultivate students’ critical thinking disposition.And if one strategy can cultivate critical thinking disposition,it usually cultivate multiple critical thinking dispositions.Finally,three sample teaching cases show questioning interaction and analysis so that principles of different questioning strategies cultivating critical thinking disposition has been summarized.In the end,relevant suggestions are obtained from the existing problems and experiences that worth learning.
