The Study On The Textual Features And Translation Techniques Of TED Talk(Selection) Subtitles

Since 2006,TED talks have been posted online.They are the high-quality video resources no matter from the aspect of English learning or that of knowledge dissemination.During recent years,they have been highly praised by English learners and non-English learners,thus the subtitle translation of TED talks is increasingly in need.The author will select two TED talks and analyze the textual features of the selected video subtitles from words and sentences,language,and subtitle display.Appropriate translation techniques will be selected to process the two subtitle texts,in order to keep the translation’s textual features consistent with that of subtitle texts,and provide reference ideas for the majority of subtitle translators.The author hopes that this approach can provide a reference for the vast number of subtitle translators.From the perspective of words and sentences,the stylistic features in the subtitle text of TED are colloquial.In order to maintain that in the translated texts,the author adopts such translation techniques as amplification,omission and co-translation to process the subtitle texts according to the domestication strategies.From language style,that of the subtitle text is closely related to the speaker’s speech topic and style,but as a whole,in order to obtain the good effect of the speech,that of the subtitle texts is humorous.The author,according to domestication strategy,processes the subtitle texts with the translation skills such as free translation,in order to maintain the expression of the speaker’s language style and keep the learners with the audience empathy in the video,as soon as possible to help their learning process.From the perspective of subtitle display,the subtitle text of TED is limited by time and space,and the author adopts the literal translation and deduction,so that the subtitle translation not only meet the subtitle display conditions,but also convey the complete information.The author hopes that these methods can provide useful ideas for subtitle translators.
