A Research On Trauma In Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns

Khaled Hosseini,an Afghan-American writer,has made extraordinary achievements in humanitarian reality literature.Although there are only three works created by him,they have made him a literary master who cannot be ignored in the 21 st century.A Thousand Splendid Suns came out in 2007,which has won great praise from literary circles,critics and readers.But most scholars paid more attention to his first work,The Kite Runner than the second.Since the publication of A Thousand Splendid Suns,the majority of scholars have studied it from the perspective of feminism,new-historicism,culture,and theme on growing up.However,only a few of them have studied this novel which started with trauma theory and traumatic narrative.What’s more,it is also a few that scholars conducted a comprehensive analysis of women’s psychological trauma.This thesis will study and analyze the heroines in A Thousand Splendid Suns from the perspective of trauma theory.In A Thousand Splendid Suns,the trauma theory makes an analysis on the psychological trauma of the heroines in this specific Afghan background,which provide an important foundation for women to dispel trauma,reconstruct themselves,and finally realize their self-value.This thesis is mainly divided into three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The main contents are as follows:The first part is about introduction.Firstly,it introduces the writer Khaled Hosseini and his works.Secondly,it comprehensively elaborates the literature review of A Thousand Splendid Suns both at home and abroad.Finally,it introduces the trauma theory and research significance employed in this thesis.The second part is the main body of the thesis,consisting of three chapters.The first chapter mainly elaborates the trauma writing in A Thousand Splendid Suns.It is mainly divided into three aspects: the trauma of Mariam,the trauma of Laila and the trauma of Aziza and Nana.The second chapter elaborates on the three main causes of trauma in the heroines,including materialization from ethical relations,alienation from doctrines and isolation from the collapse of order.The third chapter mainly talks about how the heroines recover from trauma.It mainly analyzes trauma recovery from the dispelling of trauma and the construction of personality including emotional satisfaction and sublimation,the re-pickup of belief and self-shaping and the exploration of self.The third part is the conclusion of the thesis.It makes a conclusion of the thesis based on the analysis.In the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns,through the description of the trauma of the main heroines,the trauma theory is employed to systematically explain the trauma writing in A Thousand Splendid Suns,the trauma and the aphasia of personality and how they stepped out of the trauma.Finally,it points out that although women suffer the trauma from the ethical relations,alienation from doctrines and isolation from the collapse of order,but they cannot be destroyed by it.Instead,they successfully realize emotional satisfaction and sublimation,re-pickup of belief and the shaping of self with an active attitude in examining on trauma and exploring of self,and finally realize self-value and gain freedom.
