| Sino-US economic and trade relations are close, but in recent years, bilateral trade frictions have shown an increasing trend. The huge bilateral trade imbalance is the root cause of the long-standing Sino-US trade friction.Since 2018,the US government headed by Trump has deliberately launched a trade war on the pretext of a trade deficit, despite China’s dissuasion, which has triggered another round of trade disputes between the two countries, leading the two countries entering an unprecedented period of trade frictions.Exploring the causes of trade frictions between China and the United States has become a hot research topic, and it is becoming more and more important to translate the texts of relevant research resultsThis report is a Chinese-English translation practice report. The book Research on the US Trade Deficit published by Peking University Press not only gives an objective assessment of the current trade deficit and trade disputes, but also provides a new perspective for the study of the relationship between the trade deficit and the macroeconomic system,so it helps to convey academic achievements and promote the exchange and innovation of relevant research, bearing important practical significance and academic value. The translator selected the fifth section of chapter 10(Adjustment of the U.S.Trade Deficit)as the content of the translation project and completed it as a research assistant of Professor Liu Jianjiang, the original author,at the Center for American Studies. The selected text belongs to the academic works characterized by rigorous, logical and objective language expression.According to Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, translated versions should reproduce the style of the original text, convey the information of the original text, fluent in language and help target readers have a similar response to translated texts as original readers do.Academic text translation also emphasizes on maximizing the reader’s full understanding of the original text and achieve the function of"reader’s response similar," so Nida’s theory of functional equivalence is highly compatible with the translation of academic work. When translating this text, the translator works hard to achieve functional equivalence in translation. At the lexical level, this academic text contains a large number of proper nouns and terminologies,so the translator adopts literal translation and conversion methods for translation. At the syntactic level, based on the fact that Chinese and English belong to different language families, the translator focuses on grasping the main purpose and deep connotation of the original text, instead of sticking to the mechanical correspondence of the language structure between the two languages, that is to say, obeying the translation "content and meaning first, form second" principle, and then the translator uses sentence splitting and recombination, and the translation method of tone conversion. At the textural level, mainly adopts sentence reorganization and adding conjunctions translation methods.Stylistically, based on the original author’s writing style and the translator’s initiative, omission translation method is adopted. |
