In the context of globalization of interconnection, the importance of information technology communication is increasing. So the public’s demand for translations of popular science books and periodicals is particularly urgent. However, the study of popular science translation has not been given enough attention. The book quality and translation level of related products on the market are uneven and unsatisfactory. Therefore, the study of popular science translation is of great importance and value. This report takes the C-E translation of the popular science book Plate Tectonics as the bases for analysis. The book was written by Iain Stewart and published by Ladybird Books Ltd,London in 2018.In the analysis,Schema theory was applied.Schema refers to the systematic and organized knowledge structure stored in the brain, and schema theory is actually a theory based on the understanding of schema and human cognition, which belongs to cognitive linguistics. In the process of translation, combining the understanding of the sentence with the schemata in the translator’s mind will help to speed up the understanding and then produce a good translation.Guided by schema theory, this thesis analyzes the examples from linguistic schemata and non-linguistic schemata and discusses the application of different schemata to make the translation consistent with the characteristics of popular science books,i.e.,scientific,literary,popular and interesting. It is hoped that this report can promote the research of popular science translation to a certain extent, which will help to provide some references for the follow-up research, and help to improve the level of domestic popular science translation and bring out more excellent works.
