| Genniao is a children’s literature by Cao Wenxuan, which won the Sixth Song Qingling Children’s Literature Award. The story in this novel is dominated by fantasy components, while the journey is characterized by strong realism. The main character stays true to his dream and keeps growing in his journey to the destination of his dream. There is no published translation of this book for now.The book describes sceneries, psychological activities and storylines in plain but beautiful language, facilitating young readers’ interaction with the text and encouraging them to visualize sounds and colours.Nida’s theory of functional equivalence requires that the translation should reflect the meaning of the original text as well as the style, and that the target readers of the translation should have similar reading experience and response to that of the original. After studying the structure and style of the book and the applicability of the functional equivalence theory to this practice, the writer chose the theory as a guide to translate Chapter 5 of the book,in order to better render linguistic, psychological, action and environmental expressions of the source text. From the perspective of functional equivalence theory and with the help of various effective translation techniques, the writer has made continuous exploration in translation practice and strived to overcome the difficulties and key points, concluding the difficulties and inspirations in translation practice in three aspects, namely, lexis, syntax and rhetorical devices:at the lexical level, the writer restores the lexical forms of the source text by trying to find proper expressions for reduplicative words. When translating culture-loaded words, the strategies of naturalization and foreignization are applied flexibly, and methods such as supplementing, adding notes and illustrations to explain the meaning are used accordingly. On the syntactic level, according to the respective linguistic characteristics and semantic logic of the two languages, the writer mainly investigates the application of the strategies of restructuring, sentence splitting and combination. In terms of rhetoric, the writer mainly analyzes the translation of three kinds of devices:metaphor, repetition and transferred epithet and the methods to preserve the rhetorical structure of the source text.During the translation process, the writer also makes extensive use of effective e-learning tools to assist and validate the translation. The writer sums up the reflections and analysis on the translation practice of children’s literature from the perspective of functional equivalence theory, with a view to providing a reference and insight into the C-E translation and relevant research of national children’s literature, and encouraging more and more participation in similar practice and studies. |
