The Compilation And Publication Of Leisurely-enjoying Series In The Ming Dynasty

Since mid-Ming Dynasty,the publishing industry developed rapidly,and the compilation and publication of series also entered a vigorous development stage.The leisurely-enjoying series became popular in the publishing market.Xinshang bian 欣赏编,Xinshang xvbian 欣赏续编 and Chongding Xinshang bian重订欣赏编 are typical representatives of leisurely-enjoying series in the Ming Dynasty.The first part of the paper sorts out the edition system of the three series and discusses the relationships between the three series.Under the influence of Xinshang bian,Mao Yi-xiang compiled Xinshang xvbian.The compilers of Shuofu说郛 in the late Ming Dynasty chose some of the books of Xinshang bian and Xinshang xvbian as master copies.Booksellers used the woodblocks of Shuofu说郛 compiled a new series,which was known as Chongding Xinshang bian.The second part of the paper discusses the compilation purpose of Xinshang bian,and summarizes its literature value by examining the edition origins of the works collected in the series.Shen jin was an important member of the art collector group in the middle of Ming dynasty in the south Yangtze River regions.The compilation of Xinshang bian reflects the change of people’s reading interest in this period.Extensive reading and ancient studies were meaningful for them.Shen jin’s interest in collecting books and his unique vision of selection not only made the series become the earliest leisurely-enjoying series in the Ming Dynasty,but also made the series have outstanding literature value.The third part of the paper discusses the compilation purpose of Xinshang xvbian,and summarizes its literature value by examining the edition origins of the works collected in the series.In the late Ming Dynasty,self-satisfaction,self-comfort and self-entertainment became the important connotation of leisure culture.Xinshang shifa欣赏诗法 is Mao Yi-xiang’s personal work,but its contents are mainly derived from Yiyuan zhiyan艺苑卮言,Jieyi xinyu解颐新语 and a collection of poetry works.The writing of Xinshang shifa was closely related to the compilation of the series.As far as this kind of writing behavior appears in the compilation of series,profit and fame are the two main motives.According to the theme and orientation of the series,the editors select and cut the literature.Xinshang xvbian collects lots of works which are compiled hastily by the Ming dynasty people,and its literature value is far less than Xinshang bian.In the last part,this paper comprehensively analyzes the publishing environment of leisurely-enjoying series in the Ming Dynasty,and discusses the characteristics of the compilation and publication of leisurely-enjoying series from four aspects:editing methods,the sources of materials,the records of the editors’ name,and the falsification of the title.In the end,this paper summarizes the publishing significance of leisurely-enjoying series.In the Ming Dynasty,a large number of leisurely-enjoying series were published,which provided rich reading materials and comprehensive guidance for the management of leisurely and elegant life.This upsurge of publication has enabled many small books that may have been lost,books that have nothing to do with the tradition of statecraft,to be handed down to the world.Later generations can also study the cultural life and spiritual world of the Ming dynasty people with the help of such books.
