A Study Of Master Fafang’s "Humanistic Buddhism" Thought And Practice

During the period of the Republic of China,the society changed dramatically and the current situation was turbulent.Under the internal and external troubles,Buddhism gradually declined.Master Taixu and his disciples launched the "Buddhist revolution" movement in order to seek the revival of Buddhism and solve various social problems.The theme of this movement is "Buddhism on earth",that is,Buddhism entering the world.Fafang is an important representative of "human Buddhism"movement.He devoted his whole life to the development and dissemination of "human Buddhism" and was regarded as the successor of Taixu master.However,due to his early death,he has not received enough attention from the academic circles.This paper attempts to study master Fafang’s thoughts from the perspective of human Buddhism,and discusses his thoughts from five aspects.The first chapter examines the historical development of human Buddhism.Master Taixu first put forward the concept of life Buddhism;master Yinshun is an important disciple of Taixu and has a lot of books,which promotes the development of human Buddhism and has an important influence;master Fafang,as the main successor of Taixu,has also made a clear definition of human Buddhism.After learning from Master Taixu,master Fafang has always been the right-hand assistant of Taixu.Under the arrangement of Taixu,he has made a lot of contributions to the cultivation of domestic monks and foreign Buddhist exchanges.In the contemporary era,Xingyun’s practice of human Buddhism is very representative,and has gone out of a different way of human Buddhism.The second chapter introduces the Fafang’s exploration of Buddhism.He believes that human Buddhism should not only be an entry into the world,but being above worldly considerations also an important goal.Master Fafang inherited Master Taixu’s conception of the history of Yuancheng.By interpreting the history of Buddhism,he provided a historical basis for human Buddhism.He also expressed his concern and criticism on the tendency of Buddhism to deviate from the human world.The third chapter studies the reform view of Fafang.According to the guidance of the amount of holy words,Fafang practiced the Buddhist reform of Taixu master,At the same time,it lists a lot of holy words to guide human life,which shows that Buddhism is the Enlightenment of human beings from the beginning.The fourth chapter mainly introduces the patriotic action and the activities of promoting the Malay Archipelago.Master Fafang practiced the cosmopolitan Buddhism of Taixu master,realized the establishment of the "World Buddha Union",and laid the foundation for the construction of human Buddhism in the world.The conclusion of this paper summarizes the human Buddhism thought of master Fafang,which inherits Taixu’s human Buddhism thought and Buddhist revolutionary cause,and has a profound impact on the modernization of Buddhism.This paper holds that the human Buddhism thought of Fafang is mainly the inheritance and development of Taixu master’s life Buddhism.It is an important exploration in the development of modern Buddhism and leads the direction of Buddhist modernization reform.
