| This thesis makes an exploration on the Chinese-English translation strategies of Chinese culture-loaded expressions from the perspective of frame theory. With the cross-cultural transition of cultural factors involved, the translation of Chinese culture-loaded words often becomes a difficulty for translators and has been studied from various approaches for a long time. However, few scholars have systematically studied the translation of culture-loaded words from the perspective of frame theory.Frame semantics holds great research value in translation study and has high explanatory power for the translation of culture-loaded expressionsThis paper aims to figure out the following questions:(1)Is frame theory applicable to the translation of culture-loaded words in government work reports? What is the cognitive process of translation from the perspective of frame theory?(2)What are frame operation modes of translating culture-loaded words into English?(3)From the perspective of frame theory, what are the translation strategies of culture-loaded words in government work reports? In order to answer these questions, this research intends to figure out the cognitive process of translation from the perspective of frame theory, and propose the frame operation modes in translation. It also analyzes the English translation of culture-loaded words in the 2014-2019 government work reports and sums up the translation strategies of culture-loaded words from the perspective of frame theory.Following the above research idea, this paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction part covering the research background, research purpose, significance, methods and paper structure. The second chapter reviews the studies of translation from the perspective of frame theory and culture-loaded words. The third chapter presents the theoretical framework of this thesis. It reviews related contents and concepts in frame theory, and puts forward the cognitive process of translation under this theory. In this cognitive process, the translator first activates the original frame by reading the original text, and then predicts the knowledge system and the reading expectation that the target readers may have.Last, the translator conducts cognitive operation on the source frame according to the prediction so as to get the target frame.Based on this cognitive process, this chapter proposes frame operation modes for translating culture-loaded words. When the cultural difference between the original frame and the target frame is small, the translator can directly achieve the complete correspondence of the two frames, which is the frame similarity operation. When the cultural difference of the frames is large, the translator needs to carry out frame asymmetry and frame vacancy operations.Chapter four is an applied study.Taking the translation of culture-loaded words in government work reports as an example, chapter four discusses the translation strategies of culture-loaded words under the three modes:frame similarity, frame asymmetry and frame vacancy. In the case of frame similarity, the original frame and the target frame can achieve direct correspondence and the translator’s task is to directly match the original frame with the target frame in order to realize language transformation. In the case of frame asymmetry, there are differences in frame elements, frame levels or frame relationships between the original frame and the target frame.Against this situation,it is necessary for the translator to adopt operations of frame component addition or deletion, frame level adjustment and frame metaphor. The third is frame vacancy in which the original frame lacks the corresponding frame in the target language culture,so the translator can transplant or replace the source frame. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part which reviews the contents of the whole paper, summarizes basic conclusions, main contributions, limitations and suggestions for further studyThe basic conclusion of this study is that the translation process is essentially the process of cognitive operation. In this process, the biggest obstacle for translating cultural-loaded words is the difference and vacancy of knowledge system between two language cultures. To solve this problem, the translator can use frame operations to overcome readers’comprehension difficulty caused by the difference and vacancy of knowledge structure. The frame operation modes of translation holds high explanatory power and application value for basic translation problems of culture-loaded words. |
