Analysis Of Cultural Translation In English Versions Of Fusheng Liuji From The Perspective Of Venuti’s Foreignizing Translation Theory

Chinese literary classics are the essence of Chinese culture.It is an important method to push Chinese culture "going out" by translating Chinese classical literature works.The autobiographical prose work named Fusheng Liuji written by Shen Fu,a literatus in the Qing Dynasty,is the classical work of Chinese ancient literature.And translating the work into other languages is conducive to make the social life at that time known by foreign readers,and further to render Chinese culture be appreciated by them.Taking English versions of the book from Lin Yutang and Graham Sanders as research subject,the thesis is aimed to analyze cultural translation in two versions from the perspective of Lawrence Venuti’s foreignizing translation theory based on statistical analysis and case study.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is to introduce the research background,significance,research method and structure of the thesis.And the second chapter is to introduce Fusheng Liuji,its author Shen Fu,translator Lin Yutang and Graham Sanders and their respective translation version.Moreover,literature review of the two translation versions at home would be introduced in this chapter.And the third chapter is to introduce the theoretical basis of the thesis,namely,Venuti’s foreignizing translation theory,including its content and development and related comment.The fourth chapter is case study based on Venuti’s foreignizing translation theory.According to Eugene A.Nida’s classification toward cultural elements in translation,the chapter is divided into five parts,and cultural translation cases would be categorized into ecological culture,linguistic culture,religious culture,material culture and social culture.We would delve into translators’ attitude toward cultural translation and its effect.And the fifth chapter is conclusion,including the research findings,shortcomings of the thesis and further research suggestions.In conclusion,the thesis aims to compare and analyze cultural translation in two English translation versions of Fusheng Liuji from the perspective of Venuti’s foreignizing translation theory.It’s found that translation works under the theory perform well in maintaining otherness of source culture,but when concerning popularity in receiving culture,such translation works would be poorly accepted by ordinary readers because of reading obstacles.Given to the subtle balance of maintaining otherness and popularity,in the practice of translating Chinese literature works,foreignizing translating strategy is supposed to be exerted to promote Chinese culture overseas.But the method to achieve popularity still should also be explored.The thesis is expected to find out the lesson for translating Chinese classics in English.
