| With the development of globalization and some initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiatives(BRI),it is in the urgent need to promote the cultural soft power of our country.Translation and transmission of traditional Chinese classics function as the ambassadors of cultural exchange.English translation of traditional Chinese classics at present requires improving,resulting from the misunderstandings by the gaps in cultural concepts Meanwhile,difficulties on English translation of traditional Chinese classics lie in the cultural understanding and transmission beyond language,which would be encountered by translators from home and abroad.In order to solve difficulties during translation of traditional Chinese classics,this thesis compares two English translation of Tao Te Ching,one from English sinologist Arthur Waley,the other from Chinese professor Zhao Yanchun.With cognitive translatology as theory basis,this study focuses on translating process,in which some different cognitions,attached to relevant translation tactics,have been applied.This study has also demonstrated the application and feasibility of cognitive translatology on English translation of traditional Chinese classics.The thesis consists of six chapters.The first chapter is the general introduction of the thesis.Chapter two makes an overview of previous studies on English translation of Tao Te Ching and cognitive translatology.Cognitive translatology is introduced from the aspect of theory development and framework in Chapter three.Chapter four discusses the historical background and translation style of Arthur Waley’s and Zhao Yanchun’s English translation versions of Tao Te Ching.Chapter five analyzes the two English translation versions of from the aspect of frame operation in cognitive translatology.The last chapter concludes the thesis. |
