Chinese science fiction The Three-Body Problem is the first work in China to win the Hugo award for its profound Chinese cultural background and imaginative science fiction scenes. The popularity of this work among foreign readers is inseparable from the contribution of the translator Ken Liu.Based on the three core concepts of horizon of expectations, fusion of horizons and aesthetic distance in the Reception Theory, this thesis takes The as the case to explore the translation methods systematically adopted by the translator in the process of translating long scientific sentences, neologisms and Chinese cultural words and phrases. The research shows that when dealing with scientific long sentences with many technological principles and terms that are easy to put pressure on readers, the translator mainly adopts division, explanatory translation and synthetic methods. The division method makes the syntactic structure and logic of the original text clearer and easier to merge with the reader’s horizon.Explanatory translation facilitates readers to understand the technological principles and terms in the original text, which is close to readers’ understanding level. The synthetic method uses a variety of methods to make readers understand the text better.Based on the definition of neologisms by cabre,78 neologisms are sorted out and summarized. The translator adopts literal translation, free translation and omission methods.Free translation and omission take care of the receptivity of target language readers and literal translation meets the expectation of target readers by keeping appropriate aesthetic distance and stimulating their reading interest. The translation of Chinese cultural words and phrases mainly adopt annotation, free translation and substitution methods. The annotation method makes the target language not only retain the cultural characteristics of the source language.but also achieve the fusion of horizons between the target language readers and the original text as far as possible.Free translation can make the original text easier to understand. And the substitution method is adopted to make the translation more authentic and close to the reader’s horizon when the target language corresponds to the source language phrases.By exploring the translation methods of The Three-Body Problem from the perspective of Reception Theory, this thesis aims to provide references for the English translation of Chinese science fiction in the future.
