Causes And Solutions For The Overuse Of Fillers In English-chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Use of fillers is common in interpreting.The appropriate use of fillers is an active strategy of interpreting.However,overuse of fillers can impair the quality of interpreting output,making the output redundant,hindering audience from accepting and understanding information,and further undermining the confidence of the interpreter.Previous study on interpreting fillers is relatively narrow.Overuse of fillers is usually included as one of the patterns of disfluency or redundancy of interpreting.Therefore,based on the mock conference of Ian Newton’s speech,this thesis conducts a case study focusing on the overuse of fillers in E-C consecutive interpreting.After collecting data of fillers of the case,and referring to previous scholarship of discourse markers and interpreting fillers,the author uses examples from the case to analyze and categorize the overuse of fillers,namely fillers for hesitation,fillers as starters,fillers as correction signals.The author also probes into the causes of the overuse of fillers with thorough analyses and provides targeted coping strategies.The causes are insufficient listening and understanding of SL,lack of an organized notes system and misreading of notes,and bad habits of TL speaking and absence of self-monitoring.Solutions are to improve SL listening so as to reduce hesitation,to strengthen notes-writing and notes-reading,and to enhance self-monitoring and avoid overusing fillers.
