A Practice Report On Liaison Interpreting For The Philippines DOST’s Visit To Nanning During The 16^th CAEXPO

The China-ASEAN Expo(CAEXPO)is an important international trade fair jointly sponsored by China,the 10 ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Secretariat,and is organized by the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Through holding exhibitions,forums and various activities and deepening cooperation in various fields,the CAEXPO promotes friendly exchanges between China and ASEAN countries in an all-round way.The 16 th CAEXPO,themed "Together Constructing the Belt And Road and Drawing a Vision for Cooperation",was held in Nanning from September 21 st to 24 th,2019,attracting government officials from ASEAN and other countries.The delegation from Ministry of Science and Technology(DOST)of the Philippines also attended this event with the aim of enhancing the scientific and technological cooperation with China.During the Expo,the author of this report served as the interpreter for the Philippine’s DOST and provided interpreting services for their visit in Nanning,which involved contents of advanced technology and medicine.Based on this practical interpreting,the author firstly introduces the background,characteristics,objectives and requirements of this task.Secondly,the author makes a general description of the task process,including performance evaluation and advance preparation.The advance preparation comprised of background information collection,glossary preparation,and mental and physical preparation.Thirdly,the author sets forth the problems in case analysis which covers missing of information,disfluency,misinterpretation,improper behaviors and expressions during interpreting,as well as the factors that influenced theauthor in the process of interpreting.Meanwhile,the interpreting techniques are also discussed based on specific cases,including amplification,omission,paraphrasing and generalization.Finally,the author makes a summary to evaluate the gains and losses in this interpreting practice,recognizing that it is very important to make full advance preparation before interpreting and to master and understand the relevant terms because scientific and technological terms have a direct impact on the understanding of the source language.
