The categorization of words is the core of grammar research. The lack of strict morphological changes in modern Chinese and other analytical languages makes it a hot and difficult topic to study the category of the word types in modern Chinese and modern English.Word class labeling can affect the definition,English equivalents and examples in dictionary compilation. With polysemy and syntactic multifunctionality, lexemes for logical thinking processes also affect the quality of dictionaries to a certain extent.Guided by the Two-level Word Class Categorization Theory, and based on National Language Commission Corpus, this paper studies the word class labeling of lexemes for logical thinking process in A Chinese-English Dictionary(3rdedition),New Century Chinese-English Dictionary(2ndedition)and The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(7thedition).It is found that the lexemes for logical thinking process are labeled as single-category lexemes and multi-category lexemes in the three dictionaries, but there is an obvious inconsistency in the labeling of the same word.Few lexemes in the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(7thedition)are labeled as multi-category lexemes while more of them are labeled as multi-category lexemes in the other two dictionaries, and there are also some inconsistencies in the word class labeling of the symmetrical entries among the three dictionaries.Based on the empirical study of the Modern Chinese Corpus,I find that the word class labeling of the lexemes for logical thinking processes in the three dictionaries does not conform to the actual usage pattern, and still adopts the“Principle of Simplicity”,which minimized the number of multi-category lexemes, that there are some deviations in the judgment of word classes. The purpose of this study is to clarify the word classes of the lexemes for logical thinking processes,to optimize the word class labeling,to improve the accuracy of word class labeling in Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries, and to deepen the research of modern Chinese lexemes. |
