Study On Bai Nian Yi Jiao Translated By Timothy Richard From The Perspective Of New Rhetoric

Bai Nian Yi Jiao translated by Timothy Richard Richard is the first modern western novel translated into Chinese,having an important impact on the late Qing Dynasty.Thus,it has a high research value.However,up to now,there are not many studies on Bai Nian Yi Jiao in China,and most of the existing studies focus on their translation strategies and translation influence.What’s more,few studies explore the reasons for its success in a relatively systematic way.This is not in accordance with the fame it has achieved.New rhetoric is developed based on classical rhetoric,which refers to the contemporary rhetoric theory rising in continental Europe and the United States in the 1930 s and beginning to prevail in the 1960 s and later.It has great relevance to translation studies.This thesis,for one thing,discusses the translation of Bai Nian Yi Jiao,including translation background,translation strategies and translation influence;for another thing,it reveals the story behind Bai Nian Yi Jiao from the perspective of new rhetoric,that is,why to translate,why to translate like that and why to have such a great influence.The writer finds out: first,Timothy Richard Richard’s motivation of coming to China and the Campaign of Salvation and Survival in the late Qing Dynasty constitute the exigences which are combined with the rhetorical constrictions,that is the contradiction between the Confucian culture and the Christian culture,leading to the translation of Bai Nian Yi Jiao.Second,due to the above-mentioned facts,Timothy Richard Richard has the scholar-officials as his target reader,makes full use of four symbolic resources: argument,appeals,arrangement and aesthetic according to the characteristics of the target reader,and adopts the “domestication first,foreignization second” strategy,which lead to the success of Bai Nian Yi Jiao.Third,the professional personality as a determined reformer and qualified translator as well as his good moral personality contributes to the acceptance of Bai Nian Yi Jiao.This study will enrich the research of Bai Nian Yi Jiao.
